Colossians 4:2-6

3/31/19

Colossians 4:Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us that God may open a door to us for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains, so that I may make it known as I should. Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.

Mark 3:9 - Then he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, so that the crowd wouldn’t crush him.

Revelation 7:

11 All the angels stood around the throne, and along with the elders and the four living creatures they fell facedown before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying,

Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
and thanksgiving and honor
and power and strength
be to our God forever and ever. Amen.

Act wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.

Col. 1:9 - For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding….

10 so that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God….

The Gospel

The Gospel

The Gospel

Genesis 3:15,21; John 3:16-21 ; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

  1. God made a way out of our brokenness.

Genesis 3:21 21 The Lord God made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.

(John 3:16, 16 For God loved the world in this way:[a] He gave[b] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

  1. The gospel is simple: Jesus died for our sins, was buried and raised from the dead

(1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel I preached to you, which you received, on which you have taken your stand and by which you are being saved, if you hold to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.

 (Romans 1:16).

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel,[i] because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek

1 Cor. 15

10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

  1. We must repent and believe the gospel(Mark 1:15).

Mark 1: 15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

 (John 3:17-21).

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. 19 This is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light and avoids it,[g] so that his deeds may not be exposed. 21 But anyone who lives by[h]the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be shown to be accomplished by God.”

  1. God helps us recover and pursue His design for our lives.

(Ezekiel 36:26-26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone[f] and give you a heart of flesh.

  • Jeremiah 31:31 "Look, the days are coming"--this is the LORD's declaration--"when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

 (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has[d] come! 18 Everything is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.19 That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and he has committed the message of reconciliation to us.

20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf: “Be reconciled to God.” 21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin[e] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Brokenness

Gen. 3:1-19

3/17/19

Gen. 3: Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?”

The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden. But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, ‘You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.’”

“No! You will not die,” the serpent said to the woman. “In fact, God knows that when[a] you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God,[b] knowing good and evil.” The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

  1. We chose to depart from God’s Design.
  • Isaiah 53:6 We all went astray like sheep;
    we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him
for[c] the iniquity of us all.
  • Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the[a]glory of God

  1. When we depart from God’s design, it always leads to brokenness.

Genesis 3:Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze,[c] and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

10 And he said, “I heard you[d] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

  1. Brokenness disrupts God’s design

Genesis 3: 10 And he said, “I heard you[d] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.”

11 Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

12 The man replied, “The woman you gave to be with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate.”

13 So the Lord God asked the woman, “What is this you have done?”

And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

14 So the Lord God said to the serpent:

Because you have done this,
you are cursed more than any livestock
and more than any wild animal.
You will move on your belly
and eat dust all the days of your life.
15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.

16 He said to the woman:

I will intensify your labor pains;
you will bear children with painful effort.
Your desire will be for your husband,
yet he will rule over you.

17 And he said to the man, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘Do not eat from it’:

The ground is cursed because of you.
You will eat from it by means of painful labor[e]
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.

  1. Brokenness can help us see the need for change.

  • 3:15 I will put hostility between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring.
    He will strike your head,
and you will strike his heel.
  • 3:21 The LordGod made clothing from skins for the man and his wife, and he clothed them.

Romans 5:For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. But God proveshis own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. How much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by his blood, will we be saved through him from wrath. 10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.

God’s Design

Gen. 1 & 2

http://lifeonmissionbook.com/conversation-guide

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

In the beginning God!

Gen. 1:25 So God made the wildlife of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that crawl on the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

And God saw it was good!

Gen. 1:26 26 Then God said, “Let us make man[f] in[g] our image, according to our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, the whole earth,[h] and the creatures that crawl[i] on the earth.”

Let us make Man  according to our likeness

Gen. 1:31 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good indeed. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

God said all that he created was Very Good!

So we were made in the likeness of God , we bear the image of God on us. If we have come to faith in Christ

Matthew 28:19-20 Go, therefore, and make disciplesof[e] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember,[f] I am with you always,[g] to the end of the age.”

Jesus said Go and make disciples of all nations!

As we discussed in the opening.

  1. God created us, God loves us!

  1. God has a design for every part of our lives.

  1. God designed us for relationship with Him.

Romans 3:23For all have sinned and fall short of the[a] glory of God.

John 17-15-19

Ephesians 5:15-17

John 17

15 I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

20 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word.

Ephesians 5

Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

Ephesians 5

15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you live—not as unwise people but as wise— 16 making the most of the time,[d] because the days are evil. 17 So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

Matthew 4:18-20

Ephesians 2:17:22

17 He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have accessin one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 2In him you are also being built together for God’s dwelling in the Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God produces each gift in each person.

12 For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ13 For we were all baptized by[c] one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and we were all given one Spirit to drink.14 Indeed, the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I’m not a hand, I don’t belong to the body,” it is not for that reason any less a part of the body.

Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus,[a] the source and perfecter[b] of our faith.
