A Church in Prayer

Acts 4:23-31

Aug. 5 2018

Fill up our tank…

  1. Confess and repent of sin
  2. Be in discipleship relationships
  3. Be in the Word
  4. Be in prayer!

Acts 4

23 After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together to God and said, “Master, you are the one who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David your servant:[d]

Why do the Gentiles rage
and the peoples plot futile things?
26 The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers assemble together
against the Lord and against his Messiah.[e]

27 “For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, assembled together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, 28 to do whatever your hand and your will had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that your servants may speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand for healing, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.

  1. They did not pray for their circumstances to change, or for their enemies to be out of office.

  1. They prayed with urgency!

  1. They prayed united!

24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together to God and said,

Psalm 2

Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[a]
“Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”

The one enthroned[b] in heaven laughs;
the Lord ridicules them.
Then he speaks to them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath:
“I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”

I will declare the Lord’s decree.
He said to me, “You are my Son;[c]
today I have become your Father.
Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You will break them with an iron scepter;
you will shatter them like pottery.”

10 So now, kings, be wise;
receive instruction, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with reverential awe
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Pay homage to[d] the Son or he will be angry
and you will perish in your rebellion,[e]
for his anger may ignite at any moment.
All who take refuge in him are happy.

John 15:7 - If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.

1 John 15:14-15

14 This is the confidence we have before him: If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears whatever we ask, we know that we have what we have asked of him.

Psalm 2: The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[

Luke 19: 14 “But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We don’t want this man to rule over us.’

Psalm 2

Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand,
and the rulers conspire together
against the Lord and his Anointed One:[a]
“Let’s tear off their chains
and throw their ropes off of us.”

As a church they decided to tear off the chains and throw down the ropes…and be free in Christ….and not bound by the threats of the world and of Satan…

Acts 4: 31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.
